The choke manifold is an auxiliary device for hydraulic blowout preventers (BOPs) and a main piece of equipment used to control blowouts and the pressure of oil and gas wells. It conducts well killing operations through the throttling effect of the choke valve, which displaces the contaminated drilling mud in the well while controlling the wellhead casing pressure and standpipe pressure, thereby restoring the pressure control of the mud column on the well bottom and stopping well kicks. It reduces the wellhead pressure through the pressure relief function of the choke valve to achieve "soft well shut-in". It lowers the wellhead casing pressure through the large-scale discharge effect of the blowout valve to protect the wellhead BOP stack.
